The Tour of Ripon

  1. Starting point: The Old Deanery Hotel
  2. Going out of the grounds of the Old Deanery Hotel, turn left, heading down the hill on Minster Road.
  3. At the bottom of the hill follow the road round towards Saint Marys Gate
  4. As you walk past Residence Lane, the building just after on the right is the House of Correction (1686-1816) and just after is Liberty Prison (1816-1878) and Police Station (1887-1956) which is now the Prison and Police museum.
  5. Take the next road left, onto Allhallowgate going up hill. At the top of the hill on the right the Ripon Union Workhouse (1854-1951) which is now the Workhouse museum.
  6. Take a left down finkle street and go straight on until you reach the market place, where you will find the obelisk (1702).
  7. Head out of the centre of town, down Westgate, which is diagonally opposite the way you came into the market place.
  8. At the end of Westgate, carry on in the same direction, along Park Street.
  9. On your left, after the Spa Baths is Ripon Spa Gardens, go through the Spa Gardens and take the exit which is diagonally opposite the way you came in. This should take you down some steps onto Skellbank.
  10. Once down the steps bear left on Skellbank, heading back towards the centre of town.
  11. When you reach the traffic lights, take a left onto High Skellgate, and then at the top take a right going past the Town Hall (1801).
  12. Carry on in the same direction and head down Kirkgate towards Ripon Cathedral.
  13. Turn left when you reach the Cathedral, and you are back at the Old Deanery Hotel!
