Ripon Cathedral has been a place of worship for over 1300 years. First built by Saint Wilfrid in AD 672, it was then destroyed by King Edred in AD 948. The second minster was destroyed by William the Conqueror in 1069. In 1836 the minster finally made a cathedral and has been standing ever since!
Ripon Cathedral is also a parish church and provides services ever day. If you are fortunate enough to stay in the Old Deanery on a Saturday night you will wake up to the sounds of the Ripon Cathedral Society of Change Ringers.
Ripon Cathedral is a fine example of church architecture. It has four arches, two of which are rounded Norman style arches. The other two were re-constructed after collapsing and are therefore in the English Gothic Perpendicular style, which makes them slightly pointed.
